India, Singapore order airlines to check fuel switches on Boeing jets following deadly Air India crash
India's DGCA has ordered for an investigation of the locking feature on the fuel control switches of several Boeing models, including 787s and 737s. — AFP photo NEW DELHI (July 16): India and Singapore ordered their airlines to examine fuel switches on several Boeing models with South Korea set to do the same after the devices came under scrutiny following last month's crash of an Air India jet killed 260 people. Singapore said it detected no problems with switches on its airlines' Boeing aircraft in the wake of a preliminary Indian-issued report found the devices flipped from run position to cut off shortly after takeoff. The report did not offer any conclusions or apportion blame for the June 12 disaster, but indicated that one pilot asked the other why he cut off fuel, and the second pilot responded that he had not. India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued the order Monday to investigate the locking feature on the fuel control switches of several Boeing models, including 787s and 737s. The order came after Boeing notified operators that the fuel switch locks on its jets were safe. But it was in line with a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2018, which recommended inspection of the locks to ensure they could not be moved accidentally. Several Indian and international airlines have already begun their own inspections of fuel switches. 'It has come to the notice of DGCA, that several operators — internationally as well as domestic — have initiated inspection on their aircraft fleet as per the SAIB,' DGCA said in a statement. In view of the SAIB, all airline operators of the affected aircraft must complete the inspection by July 21, it added. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was headed from Ahmedabad in western India to London when it crashed, killing all but one of the 242 people on board as well as 19 people on the ground. In a letter to employees on Monday, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the investigation into the crash was ongoing and it would be unwise to jump to 'premature conclusions'. Singapore reported that it had examined fuel switches on its airlines' Boeing aircraft. 'Our checks confirmed that all fuel switches on SIA (Singapore Airlines) and Scoot's Boeing 787 aircraft are functioning properly and comply with regulatory requirements,' an SIA spokesperson told AFP. South Korea was also going to order its airlines to examine fuel switches on Boeing jets, Seoul's transport ministry said on Tuesday. 'The ministry is preparing to order all South Korean airlines that operate Boeing aircraft to examine fuel switches in accordance with the FAA 2018 directives,' a ministry spokesperson told AFP. — AFP

In a moving speech prior to the closing of the ceremony, Student Orator Bhumika Jethnani encapsulated the essence of the graduates' collective experiences. 'Over the years, we have grown, not just as students, but as people. We have tackled lab reports, clinical cases, research projects, group work, and maybe even a few identity crises along the way. We learnt what it means to truly care, not just about our studies, but about our communities, our values, and one another. But none of this happened in isolation,' she observed, before proceeding to express her gratitude to the lecturers, tutors, and staff of NUMed, families, friends, and fellow graduates. Bhumika is one of the future doctors who are preparing to enter Foundation Doctor training in the UK or embarking on their careers in Malaysia. As NUMed's MBBS degrees are recognised by both the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK, graduates are prepared to step into both healthcare systems confidently and seamlessly. Among those who congratulated the graduates were Professor Wong and Professor Vishna Devi V Nadarajah, Chief Executive Officer and Provost of NUMed. Professor Wong urged them to 'Champion excellence by raising standards in your field, lead with creativity by challenging convention, and drive impact by advancing equity and community good. Whether you're saving lives, shaping policy, creating new technologies, or exploring scientific frontiers, your knowledge holds the power to change the world.' Professor David Burn (centre) was presented with a token of appreciation by Professor Dennis Wong (right) and Premila Nair (left). Trump says Indonesia to face 19 pct tariff under trade deal
Indonesian goods entering the United States would face a 19 per cent tariff, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. – AFP photo WASHINGTON (July 16): US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he had struck a trade pact with Indonesia resulting in significant purchase commitments from the Southeast Asian country, following negotiations to avoid steeper tariffs. Indonesian goods entering the United States would face a 19 per cent tariff, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. This is significantly below the 32 per cent level the president earlier threatened. 'As part of the Agreement, Indonesia has committed to purchasing $15 Billion Dollars in US Energy, $4.5 Billion Dollars in American Agricultural Products, and 50 Boeing Jets, many of them 777's,' Trump wrote. Boeing shares closed down 0.2 per cent after the announcement. The Trump administration has been under pressure to wrap up trade pacts after promising a flurry of deals recently, as countries sought talks with Washington to avoid the US president's tariff plans. But Trump has so far only unveiled other deals with Britain and Vietnam, alongside an agreement to temporarily lower tit-for-tat levies with China. Last week, Trump renewed his threat of a 32 per cent levy on Indonesian goods, saying in a letter to the country's leadership that this would take effect August 1. It remains unclear when the lower tariff level announced Tuesday will take effect for Indonesia. The period over which its various purchases will take place was also not specified. Trump said on social media that under the deal, which was finalized after he spoke with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, goods that have been transshipped to avoid higher duties would face steeper levies. He separately told reporters that other deals were in the works, including with India, while talks with the European Union are continuing. Indonesia's former vice minister for foreign affairs, Dino Patti Djalal, told a Foreign Policy event Tuesday that government insiders had indicated they were happy with the new deal. Tariffs drive Trump in April imposed a 10 per cent tariff on almost all trading partners, while announcing plans to eventually hike this level for dozens of economies, including the EU and Indonesia. But days before the steeper duties, customized to each economy, were due to take effect, he pushed the deadline back from July 9 to August 1. This marked his second postponement of the elevated levies. Instead, since early last week, Trump has been sending letters to partners, setting out the tariff levels they would face come August. So far, he has sent more than 20 such letters including to the EU, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia. Canada and Mexico, both countries that were not originally targeted in Trump's 'reciprocal' tariff push in April, also received similar documents outlining updated tariffs for their products. But existing exemptions covering goods entering the United States under a North American trade pact are expected to remain in place, a US official earlier said. Trump has unveiled blanket tariffs on trading partners in part to address what his administration deems as unfair practices that hurt US businesses. Analysts have warned that without trade agreements, Americans could conclude that Trump's strategy to reshape US trading ties with the world has not worked. 'In the public's mind, the tariffs are the pain, and the agreements will be the gain. If there are no agreements, people will conclude his strategy was flawed,' William Reinsch, senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, previously told AFP. donald trump indonesia tariff trade pact
